Check your o-rings

Often check your drain plugs to make sure the o-rings are okay. A cracked or missing o-ring can allow water to leak in. If you need to buy a new drain plug, check to see if your new drain plug comes with the o-ring on it. If it doesn’t, you must order the o-ring separately.

Check your gasket!

Check your gasket on your gas cap every time you fuel up! Sometimes when fueling up at the water, you can have an accident by dropping the cap in the water.

When you go to the dealer to order a new cap, make sure you get the gasket also, because a new cap does not come with a new gasket. A proper parts salesman should ask if you need the gasket with the new cap, but they don’t always. If you do not have the gasket, you have a chance of water filling your fuel system, which can clog the carburetors or fuel injection system.

Check your servo motor function

For Yamaha 800, 1200 and 1300 power valve motors, check the function of your servo motor on a regular basis. The motor does a cleaning cycle when the machine is shut off. It is supposed to turn the wheel on the rear cylinder to the open and back to the closed position, in a nice smooth fashion. If it is straining to open the power valves, your valves may need cleaning, or your cables may need adjusting or replacing.

You can check individual valves for movement by unhooking the cables and taking off the little black adaptor in between the cylinders. After this is done, you may turn each power valve one by one. If they feel sticky or are not moving, you must remove the black caps to remove the power valves and clean them.

For cable adjustment, there is a little hole in the wheel. You must install a small allen key through the hole and into the small hole on the side of the cylinder. Once this is done, you can check the movement of each cable. They should have about an eighth inch of movement from side to side. If they do not, they must be adjusted or replaced.

If these two checks are not working properly, the servo motor can go bad because of the strain the cables and the stuck valves put on it. The servo motor is a very expensive piece (around $350 range).
